Before you begin
Some services offer subscriptions both on their websites and as purchases inside an official iPhone app. If an App Store subscription is available for your country, account and plan, Apple processes the purchase using a payment method saved to your Apple Account. This is different from adding a card to Apple Pay.
- Check that the app is the official app from the service’s actual publisher, and that it offers your intended subscription as an Apple in-app purchase.
- Check the service account in the app. If you already subscribe on the website, Google Play or another Apple Account, verify the existing plan first to avoid double billing.
- Open iPhone Settings → your name → Payment & Shipping. Add an eligible SafePay card with the exact billing details shown in SafePay and the accurate personal information required by Apple. Card eligibility depends on Apple, the issuer and the account region.
- Check that the card has enough funds for the amount and possible validation charge. A card saved only in Apple Wallet is not automatically a payment method for the App Store.
Complete the in-app purchase
- Open the official iPhone app and sign in to the service account where you want the subscription.
- Find the app’s Upgrade, Plans, Membership or Subscriptions section and select the desired offer; the exact labels vary by service and version.
- Check the price, currency, billing interval, trial status and renewal conditions. Available plans and prices can differ from the same service’s website.
- Continue only if you see Apple’s system purchase confirmation sheet. Confirm through Apple’s checkout and wait for the result.
- Reopen the service’s subscription settings and check that the plan is active in the intended account.
If the app opens an external browser instead of Apple’s purchase sheet, you are using the service’s web checkout, not App Store billing. Follow the service’s website-payment guide instead.
Where do I manage or cancel the subscription?
For an App Store purchase, open Settings → your name → Subscriptions on the iPhone. Review the next charge or renewal date and cancel there if you no longer need it. For a website purchase, use the merchant’s website. Cancelling or freezing the SafePay card is not the same as cancelling the subscription.
Examples of services with different purchase channels
Depending on the official app, country, plan and account, iOS in-app purchases may be offered for services such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Suno, Canva, YouTube Premium, Dropbox and Google One. This is not a SafePay acceptance guarantee: the app, plan, account, region, issuer and merchant must independently support the transaction. For ChatGPT, some upgrades may need the website. For Dropbox, corporate and team products can require administrator billing on the website. For Microsoft, an iOS purchase of an eligible Microsoft 365 offer is not a way to buy Xbox games or Game Pass in the App Store.
Patreon: some memberships may be offered as App Store purchases, but under the current SafePay card terms Universal+ is not supported for Patreon. Do not rely on any App Store route as a workaround. Ask SafePay Support whether your card and purchase channel are eligible before funding for that purpose.
If something goes wrong
- If the app does not offer an Apple purchase sheet, this plan or purchase route may not be available. An app download does not guarantee App Store subscription billing.
- If Apple declines the card, check the Apple Account region, your actual eligibility, payment-method details and existing unpaid purchases. See the Apple Account troubleshooting guide.
- If Apple charged you but the subscription is not active, check the Apple purchase receipt, the signed-in service account and Settings → Subscriptions before trying to pay again.
- Never purchase the same membership through the website and App Store simultaneously without checking whether both will renew.
